Apple's new software update is making it easier for travelers to track their lost luggage, thanks to an upgrade to the Find My feature. This update, part of iOS 18.2, introduces a game-changing option for iPhone users: the ability to share the location of their luggage directly with airlines. With this feature, if your luggage gets lost or rerouted, you can send its location to the airline through your Apple device, making it simpler to track down misplaced bags.
More than a dozen U.S. airlines, including major carriers like Delta and United, have already joined the program. Travelers can send real-time location updates of their luggage directly to the airline, helping the staff track the bag and return it to its rightful owner more efficiently. This new feature is available for iPhone X users and newer devices with access to the iOS 18.2 public beta.
"Find My is an essential tool for users around the world to keep track of and find their belongings," said Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Services. "The Find My network and AirTag have proven to be a powerful combination for users while traveling, providing invaluable location information when bags have been misplaced or mishandled." This means travelers can have peace of mind knowing they can track their bags, even if the airline can't find them immediately.
Airlines worldwide will also access this feature, including Aer Lingus, Air Canada, British Airways, Singapore Airlines, and many others. As a traveler, you'll have a much higher chance of retrieving your misplaced luggage quickly. Apple has promised that more airlines will be added soon, expanding the number of airlines that can use the Find My feature to locate lost baggage.
The update comes at a perfect time, as the U.S. Department of Transportation recently implemented new rules requiring airlines to refund checked bag fees if luggage is lost or delayed. This latest Apple feature could help airlines reduce the number of lost luggage claims, as it will be easier to locate and return bags, avoiding costly refunds.
If your luggage goes missing, filing a report with the airline and keeping track of their lost baggage policy is essential. With this new update, you'll have the added benefit of tracking your luggage's exact location. The days of wondering where your luggage is may finally be over, making travel just a little bit easier for everyone.
