A United Airlines flight faced "severe turbulence," injuring seven people and forcing an emergency landing in Memphis, officials said. The Boeing 737 was flying from Cancún, Mexico, to Chicago when it encountered turbulence over Louisiana, as reported by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
"United flight 1196 diverted to Memphis this afternoon after encountering a brief period of severe turbulence," the airline confirmed. Paramedics attended to passengers upon landing. According to the Memphis Fire Department, one person was taken to the hospital, while six others declined treatment. The extent of the hospitalized passenger's injuries remains unclear.
The flight carried 179 people, including seven crew members. Despite the incident, the flight resumed its journey to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, arriving two hours late, according to FlightAware.
While it's a rare incident, turbulence is a leading cause of injury in nonfatal aviation incidents. A University of Reading study shows that severe turbulence has increased by 55% over four decades due to climate change.
The FAA is currently investigating the turbulence of United Airlines flights.
