World’s Busiest Airport: Over 48 Million Passengers in a Single Year
Mexico City International Airport, known locally as Aeropuerto Internacional Ciudad de México (AICM), is the busiest international airport in Central America and the world's busiest two-runway airport. This impressive air hub manages an average of 1,056 aircraft movements daily, a testament to its vital role in global travel.
In 2023, AICM welcomed over 48.4 million passengers—a remarkable increase of nearly two million from the previous year. Located in the heart of Mexico City, the airport is just minutes away from many popular tourist districts, offering a warm and convenient welcome to all visitors.
This airport offers an extensive network, providing flights to and from major global cities like Amsterdam, Bogotá, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Santiago, London, and Los Angeles. It also offers convenient international connections to most Central American capitals and an extensive range of domestic flights to virtually every major Mexican airport.
AICM features two terminals located at the southwestern end of the airport grounds, flanking its runways. Inside, travelers can enjoy a range of luxurious amenities provided by exclusive lounges from American Express, HSBC, and Lufthansa.
The high volume of air traffic at this bustling airport led Mexican authorities to designate its airspace as "saturated" in 2014, highlighting the critical need for efficient management and infrastructure upgrades to handle its significant operational demands.
